Proverbs 1:20 Wisdom shouts in the street,
She lifts her voice in the square;
God's Word contains everything we need for life - spiritual and physical, too. We can apply wisdom even in what we eat!
Now before the fingers start pointing at us for being legalistic, let me explain. We do not hold to an authoritarian view in which you'd better follow certain rules or else. Right up front let me assure that diet is a liberty garden issue.
That means that in Christ we are free to eat anything with out suffering any spiritual consequences. But that does NOT mean that we will also escape physical consequences for poor eating habits. A person can be a smoker and eat Twinkies all day long and still be saved. Yet salvation will not prevent the phsyical disease brought about by such a life style.
God wants us to be free -in Christ! And God wants us to be wise (Prov. 1). It is no argument that some dietary options are healthier than others. So the question then becomes how do we hold to a balanced, libertarian, AND Biblical view of nutrition?
There are no hard and fast rules. But we would like to share some basic principles of nutrition with you. We believe in God's Word and we trust in His Provision for us. God has given us good foods to eat. Man generally makes junk food out of it. God's foods in their natural state are delicious. Man's farming and preserving methods often leave a bad taste.
Some of the basic principles that we believe in can be summed up in a few ways.
1) Eat as much fresh produce as you can. This is how God intended for us to eat. If comes from a can or a box, that is what man had provided - after stripping the nutrients from the package. Eat a combination of raw and cooked vegetables.
2) Use whole foods. Did you know that gourmet restaurants now offering mashed red potatoes w/ the skins on? They taste great in the original packaging that God gave them. The peels contain vital nutrition so don't throw them away. Use whole wheat flour instead of white. Whatever the food, use it whole and in as close to the original state as possible.
3) Make your foods from scratch at home. This is quickly becoming a lost art. A good, old fashioned, home cooked meal is delicious! And it requires fresher ingredients.
We have found that using God's produce is a key to making the most delicious foods. And there are some simple ways to make it rather easy to accomplish.
